Before you hire: Florida doesn't license painters statewide (some counties do). If your home was built before 1978, a federal rule applies: a painter who sands, scrapes or cuts more than a small area of old paint (about 6 square feet inside or 20 outside) must be an EPA Lead-Safe Certified firm and work lead-safe. Ask for the firm's certification, a written price that says how many coats and which paint, and proof of insurance.
